Overview:

Building on the Map & Compass course, or for students with some outdoor experience, this hands-on experiential advanced orienteering program is aimed at serious wilderness travellers.

Purpose:

To learn advanced compass and orienteering skills.

Topics:

  • using topographic maps, magnetic compass, aerial photographs, and stereoscopes,
  • other methods to avoid the syndrome of walking in circles,
  • the 5-step technique of calculating corrected bearings,
  • advanced map-reading.

Duration:

  • 3 three-hour evening sessions, or 1 nine-hour Saturday session, plus,
  • a mandatory 1-day field outing.

Misc:

Participants must own or purchase a 'ranger'-type compass.
