Overview:

This course will teach students how to identify 50-75 different species of plants, trees, shrubs, ferns, and lichens.

Purpose:

To learn the uses (edible, medicinal, or camping) of wild species, and learn to distinguish poisonous and toxic species.

Topics:

  • basic principles of ecology and habitats,
  • species preferences and site distribution,
  • rules and regulations,
  • safety and health concerns,
  • ethics of plant foraging.

Students will also learn to make teas, salads, jams and bannock.

Duration:

  • seminars (2 three-hour evening sessions or 1 eight-hour Saturday session) , plus,
  • field hike (9 hours)

Course field manual available at first session, $ 9.95.
