DESCRIPTION:Overview:\nLearn to plan and carry out a backpacking trip into the remote wilderness.  Students will examine the choice of sites available to backpackers\, e.g.\, National and Provincial Parks\, Crown Lands\, Provinical/National/State/Club Trail Systems etc.\nPurpose:\nTo acquire lightweight camping and backpacking skills.\nTopics:\ntrip planning and logistics\ncamping gear selection\nproper footwear and clothing considerations\nmenus and water supply\, and\,\nsample trip routes.\nDuration:\n4 or 5 evening sessions\, plus\,\none weekend outing.\nMisc:\nThe objective of the course is to oversee the group through the implementation of a wilderness backpacking trip.

DESCRIPTION:Overview:\nThis course will teach students how to identify 50-75 different species of plants\, trees\, shrubs\, ferns\, and lichens.\nPurpose:\nTo learn the uses (edible\, medicinal\, or camping) of wild species\, and learn to distinguish poisonous and toxic species.\nTopics:\nbasic principles of ecology and habitats\,\nspecies preferences and site distribution\,\nrules and regulations\,\nsafety and health concerns\,\nethics of plant foraging.\nStudents will also learn to make teas\, salads\, jams and bannock.\nDuration:\nseminars (2 three-hour evening sessions or 1 eight-hour Saturday session) \, plus\,\nfield hike (9 hours)\nMisc:\nCourse field manual available at first session\, $ 9.95.
