Advanced Edible Plants and Ecology

Overview:
This course will teach students how to identify 50-75 different species of plants, trees, shrubs, ferns, and lichens.
Purpose:
To learn the uses (edible, medicinal, or camping) of wild species, and learn to distinguish poisonous and toxic species.
Topics:
basic principles of ecology and habitats,
species preferences and site distribution,
rules and regulations,
safety and health concerns,
ethics of plant foraging.
Students will also learn to make teas, salads, jams and bannock.
Duration:
seminars (2 three-hour evening sessions or 1 eight-hour Saturday session) , plus,
field hike (9 hours)
